We desire that all we do be done for the glory of God. As we move deeper in Christ and further in mission, we envision Harbor Covenant Church nourished by a living communion with Christ, giving rise to an authentic community engaged in an epic commission.
Communion
We envision a people nourished by their ever-deepening, living communion with God.
As the water of a rushing river gives life to its surroundings, we are given life through our encounter with God revealed in Jesus Christ by means of the Holy Spirit. "As you come to him, the living Stone ... you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood." I Peter 2: 4,5.
Community
We envision a people who care deeply about one another in authentic community. Like an exquisite Pacific Northwest forest, we are an ecosystem with a God-designed need for interdependence. "Once we were not a people, now we are the people of God..." I Peter 2: 10.
Commission
We envision a people following with abandon the risky calling of Jesus, in response to God's epic commission. As mighty Mt. Rainier beckons climbers to its summit, we are beckoned to the ultimate adventure of loving God and loving others. In the great commandment, God calls us to the adventure of loving God with all our heart, all our soul, all our mind, and all our strength. In the great commission, God calls us to the adventure of inviting and equipping others in our community and in the world to become devoted, growing followers of Jesus Christ. "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength." Mark 12:30. "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age." Matthew 28:19-20.
Our Mission
Our Mission Statement
Harbor Covenant Churchexists to invite and equip people to become devoted, growing followers of Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, who actively live out their faith in relationship with others.
God's mission in this world
God loves us, yet we spend a lot of energy resisting that love. God is continually inviting us to own up to the truth that our 21st century suburban life in the Pacific Northwest is built around self-protection. The evidence is clear when we are willing to look. We design our lives to fill every minute with activity. We are caught in the drive to acquire and consume. We create lives of isolation from God and others. Let's name it for what it is: sin. But God offers a different kind of life -- eternal life in relationship with Jesus Christ, which unites us to God and to the people of God. Once our lives were defined by the narrow boundaries of our own efforts. Now, by grace, we are defined by the unfolding, epic revelation of God in and through us.
God's Call To Us
There is a rhythm of growing and going in the life of the followers of Christ -- the rhythm of being formed and transformed inside and of then reaching out beyond ourselves. Biblical language for this is found in the command to love God and the commission to love others. We are becoming like Christ and are serving with Christ. We can draw on the best of the concepts of monastery and mission agency. We are committed to our Christian spiritual formation, but we are not a monastery in the old world sense of isolation. We are committed to equipping and encouraging everyone to be engaged in ministry as God has called and gifted, but we are not a mission agency in the sense that we are sending all our people to foreign countries. We are growing in Christ and serving with Christ. We desire to be faithful to God's calling. Therefore we commit ourselves to move deeper in Christ and further in mission.
Our Values
Passion Defines Us - Not Programs.
Passion in worship of God. Passion in devotion to God. Passion in service with God.
People Are Our Priority - Not Numbers.
People need to be invited to be followers of Jesus Christ. People need to grow as followers of Jesus Christ. People need to live out their faith in relationship with others.
Grace Forms Our Relationships - Not Judgment.
Grace is God's gift to us and our gift to others. Grace is our only means of salvation. Grace is our only means of growth in Christ.
Movement Marks Us - Not Institutionalism.
Movement in our hearts as we are formed into the character of Christ. Movement in our ministries as we follow the Holy Spirit. Movement that keeps us soft and pliable, not stiff and set.
Permission Pervades The Air - Not Suspicion.
Permission to use our spiritual gifts as God calls us. Permission in ministry that affirms the priesthood of all believers. Permission to dream.
Courage energizes us - not fear.
Courage to confront our culture with the transforming love of Jesus. Courage that sends us out to the world. Courage to invite each other to maturity in Jesus.
Relationships reveal God's love - not merely words.
Relationships nurture authentic community among God's people. Relationships build team for ministry. Relationships nurture opportunities to share the gospel with seekers.
