Our stories

Harbor Covenant Church came into being in 1980 as a group from First Covenant Church in Tacoma joined to "plant" a new church in Gig Harbor. We were officially organized in 1981 as a mission congregation of the North Pacific Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church.

The first meeting location was the Haven of Rest chapel -- a mortuary! The chapel was lovely but the site naturally lent itself to a number of jokes among the group, such as "people are dying to get in here" and "our attendance statistics do not include individuals present in caskets or small boxes." The congregation expanded to 140 in a year and a half, so met in the Gig Harbor High School for a while before moving to our current 10 acre site in 1985.

We've had the joy of sending out our own members to plant two new thriving churches -- Covenant Fellowship in Port Orchard (1999) and Tapestry Covenant, a multi-ethnic community in Tacoma (2001).

The original group of 41 charter members has expanded to a present worshiping congregation of approximately 600, with multi-faceted ministries to children, youth, and adults of the community.
