An Opportunity to Fight Hunger The Harbor For Hunger: What can Gig Harbor do to fight the Global Food Crisis?
In an effort to raise awareness, on Saturday, August 23 an event at Harbor Covenant Church hosted by World Vision and open to the Gig Harbor community will emphasize the Global Food Crisis affecting nearly the entire world today.
As food and fuel prices continue to rise around the world, poor households which were already struggling to afford basic foods are being pushed deeper into poverty, while many newly vulnerable groups are emerging—particularly in urban areas. Children’s nutrition, health, education and protection are under increasing threat and many millions face hunger on a daily basis. In times of crisis, it’s the children that tend to suffer the most.
The effects of the food crisis are felt even in the world’s most affluent communities, as well as the most impoverished. It is increasingly inconvenient for many, but devastating and life threatening for many more.
As a community, Gig Harbor has a great opportunity to adopt this cause and find ways within our families, businesses, schools, clubs, etc. to fight hunger not only internationally but here at home, as well. “The Harbor For Hunger” is an event planned for the purpose of raising awareness, to demonstrate the tragedy of hunger, and reflect on what we can do to make a difference. Be sure to be at Harbor Covenant Church at 7:00 p.m. on August 23. The evening will feature the band Circadian. A freewill offering will follow.
Gig Harbor Multiple Sclerosis Self-Help Group meets the first Tuesday of each month 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. These gatherings will take place in Room 101. This group welcomes people of all ages with all different types of MS. We invite you to share your story and learn new ways to live with MS.
The benefits of attending a self help group include: • Hear current MS information and research • Find reassurance and support from others with similar life experiences • Feel less isolated • Discover resources in your community • Become empowered and more self-confident in coping with challenges
