LIBRARY NEWS
Awaiting God’s Gift The Advent season has been observed for centuries; but many of us, in a flurry of activities, can miss the essence of the Christmas season if we are not mindful of how Christ’s birth took place. Advent marks something momentous: God’s coming into our midst. That coming was not just something that happened in the past; it is a recurring possibility here and now.
This year, take time to meditate on God’s great gift to us. A book from the library entitled, Watch for the Light: Readings for Advent and Christmas would be a great start. This book is a series of daily readings; however, each reading stands on its own. The essays are written by various authors such as J.B. Phillips, Henri Nouwen, St. Thomas Aquinas, Madeleine L’Engle, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, C.S. Lewis and others. It will be on display in the library to check out for a three week period.
Other books of inspirational Christmas stories will also be on display during the month of December. Christmas Miracles written by Brad and Sherry Steiger contains stories of miracles beginning with the first Christmas as told in Matthew and Luke. You may want to read Corrie Ten Boom’s book, Christmas Memories, or The Glory of Christmas which is an assortment of inspirational writings from Charles Swindoll, Max Lucado and Charles Colson.
If you enjoy singing your praises of God’s love, you’ll love 100 Songs of the Seasons published by Singspiration Music. This book contains songs for Christmas, Holy Week and Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Patriotic Occasions and Thanksgiving.
Children’s books can also be found on display in December. Among the many available are The Christmas Candle written by Richard Paul Evans, author of The Christmas Box, which includes delightful paintings by Jacob Collins. Jacob’s Gift by Max Lucado is another beautiful book, illustrated by Robert Hunt that tells a wonderful story. The Christmas Stories of George Macdonald has a few illustrations by Linda Hill Griffith which are richly done. The stories are longer and may be read in series of days for younger children. The Littlest Angel by Charles Tazewell is the original Christmas classic and has many illustrations by Sergio Leone. For those who love the Little House books, A Little House Christmas, illustrated by Garth Williams, is filled with Holiday stories from that series by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
In addition to all the books, we will have an assortment of Advent and Christmas CDs, Videos and DVDs on display. Come and browse the library located in room 212 of the Education Building. It will be open during all office hours.
Have a Blessed Advent and Christmas.
